AION 2 Heads to Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live

NC announced on August 6, 2026 that AION 2 will appear during gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, alongside the third-person shooter CINDER CITY and the first public reveal of an unannounced title codenamed Project Bonfire — whose real name and debut trailer land at the same show. gamescom 2026 runs in Cologne from August 26 to 30, with Guild Wars 3 shown separately in the B2B area. ONL falls about five weeks before AION 2's September 30 Early Access, making it the most likely stage for the launch day NC still has not named.

NC is bringing three titles to Opening Night Live

On August 6, 2026, NC (the company formerly branded NCSOFT) announced that it will show three titles at gamescom 2026: AION 2, CINDER CITY, and an unannounced project currently carrying the development codename Project Bonfire. All three appear during gamescom Opening Night Live, the event's eve showcase, on August 25. gamescom itself runs in Cologne, Germany from August 26 to August 30.

For AION 2 specifically, NC's framing is straightforward: gamescom is a reach-and-anticipation play ahead of the launch, with Founder's Pack sales already open and Early Access set for September 30. NC did not announce new AION 2 content, a new trailer, or a booth demo as part of the release — the confirmed detail is that the game is part of the ONL segment.

The timing matters more than the announcement does. ONL on August 25 lands roughly five weeks before the September 30 Early Access start, which makes it the most likely stage for NC to finally name the free-to-play launch day — something the company still had not done as of the August 7 global livestream.

What is Project Bonfire?

Nothing, officially — that is the point. Project Bonfire is a development codename for a title NC has never announced. At Opening Night Live, NC says it will reveal the game's official title via a trailer and introduce its core concepts and key features, with more information released in stages afterwards and further details shared during gamescom itself. A teaser for the ONL segment is already up on NC's official YouTube channel.

Genre, platforms, setting, studio and release window are all unannounced. Anything currently circulating about what Project Bonfire is should be treated as speculation until the August 25 trailer.

CINDER CITY and Guild Wars 3

CINDER CITY, NC's open-world cinematic third-person shooter, gets a new trailer at ONL focused on the game's story and setting. Its Steam page opened in July 2026 and the team has been posting development updates since. It is a separate title from AION 2 and shares no announced connection to it.

Guild Wars 3 — in development at NC's North American studio ArenaNet, for PC and console — is not part of the ONL segment. It will instead be shown in gamescom's B2B area, continuing a run of trade-show appearances since its reveal at Summer Game Fest in June 2026.

The Guild Wars 3 overlap is the same one AION 2's producers were asked about at Summer Game Fest, when they described two NC MMOs chasing the same players as friendly competition.

What this does not tell us

No AION 2 launch day. As of August 10, 2026, the officially stated dates are Early Access beginning September 30 and running five days, with Steam's release field still reading "September 2026" and no NC channel naming the free-to-play launch day. Aggregator sites have begun publishing "October 5" as if it were announced; it does not appear in NC's gamescom release or in any of the reports covering it, and we do not treat it as confirmed. Our release date guide is updated whenever that position changes.

Also unannounced: whether AION 2 will have playable stations on the gamescom show floor, whether a new AION 2 trailer is part of the ONL segment, and whether the Western beta test some players are still hoping for exists at all. NC's release named the three titles and the showcase — not a content slate.
